The Château de Saurs is one of those classic 19th Century (1854) chateau that are littered around this area and yet continue to surprise in the beauty. The Gineste de Saurs family remain in the premises, and continue to make wine here, which started in earnest in the 1930s. Naturally it is an impressive setting, but there is also a committed, dedicated team behind the wine too, where organic and biodynamic viticulture is to the fore and wines are made that reflect the diversity and individuality of this oft over looked region.
The vineyards lie to the west of Gaillac itself, and are planted to Fer Servadou (Braucol), Cabernet, Duras, and Syrah for the reds, with whites being Loin de L’Oeil, Mauzac and Sauvignon. Planted over clay and limestone on the higher, south facing slopes and alluvial gravel on the lower slopes (they are in the Tarn valley), on south facing slopes. The vines are worked by hand or tractor organically, and with minimal soil disturbance. Vinification happens in the cellars below the chateau in a clean and modern winery, framed by the 19th century brickwork. The wines are authentic expressions of the region, are superb on their own as much as with food and offer huge value.
