A new grower to the list, owned in partnership by Francois Delhon, the youngest member of the family who set up Bassac three generations ago. The vineyards are worked organically and Francois is meticulous in his care of the soil and plants ensuring that when the fruit arrives at the winery it is in perfect condition and never requires any ‘dressing’. This is obvious as despite the simple pricing, these are intricate and interesting wines made with obvious passion and care. The Margalh wines are named after the wild grass that can be found among the vines and a sign that no herbicides are used.
The white is a blend of Sauvignon, Grenache Blanc and Muscat, the red Cabernet, Syrah and Grenache. The Cabernet Franc was planted by Francois Grand Father, and the age of vines and passion for the variety make this one of the most attractive examples of the grape at this level. The Merlot is equally delicious, and typically spicy and fleshy. Margalh Rose is a Provençal style rose made by Francois to arrest the sales of his neighbouring region on his own patch, and produced from Cinsault, Grencahe Syrah and Rolle. Finally, the Muscat is a fresh, citrusy style with 50mg of RS and 10.5% ABV and is not fortified.
