Located on the village of Saint Aubin de Luignie in the Layon valley, Domaine des Brumes is a patchwork of 13 hectares planted around the western Anjou Noir region. Lucile and Darian met in Normandy and through their love affair with wine (and each other), made a vow to set up their own estate in the place where the wines they loved the most came from. Over a few years they amassed a small domaine and set about converting to organic viticulture with a view to being biodynamic in a few years. Their respect for nature and the terroir they now are custodians of, is captivating. Their gentle characters and desire to be as light on their land as possible translates to their wines too, each one with a detail and freshenss that indicates their hands off approach to extraction and sensitivity to creating elegance and finesse in their wines.
The first vineyards planted mainly over schistous bedrock, are planted with Chenin Blanc, their first love, Grolleau, harking back to the regions Rosé heritage and Cabernet Franc, which is used in Anjou Noir. They have also recently bought in a parcel of old vine Gamay, and planted some Sauvignon Blanc to add to an older parcel and a tiny parcel of Cabernet Franc. Their motto is simply: ‘Alive’, and this is stamped on every aspect of their viticultural work, as well as their winemaking.
In the cellar, stainless steel is employed for fermentation and elevage, with a small portion of oak being used to hone the reds if required. As extraction is more of an infusion, the wines are ready to be bottled relatively young and exude the freshness and minerality this region is so famous for. There is no fining or filtration here and they chose not to use capsules on their bottles.
